Barbara Kerwin

I moved to L A and was a Fellow at C G U where I received my MFA in Painting and Sculpture. My thesis show, “Constructed Paintings”, was made for the walls and floors. There was a map to a nearby gallery where one entered a room-sized “Nest" of pulled "pigments". I received the All University Fellow Award, the Academic Award, and was selected for gallery representation. My first solo show was, “The Grid”. I got the gallery’s specs and created spatial relationships between my paintings and the gallery itself. I was told nothing would sell, as I was being introduced to collectors. The LA Times had my painting on the front page of the Calendar section, with the title, “Number One Thing to do In LA this Weekend—See Barbara Kerwin’s, The Grid”. This first show, sold out. Thus began my professional exhibitions now over 110. With excellent reviews and loyal collectors (most have more than one of my paintings), I’ve received grants to support my projects. Composition and color stand with me in my studio. Texture informs feelings. My works have emerged into a highly complex set of overlapping trapezoidal shapes that splinter to make dynamic compositions about equality.”
