VALERIE HIRD
Valerie Hird is a multidisciplinary artist known for her contributions as a painter, set designer, and award-winning filmmaker. Based in Vermont and New York, she also works extensively in the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) regions. Hird’s art delves into cultural mythologies, examining their impact on societal perceptions. Over the years, she has traversed diverse cultures, collecting and interpreting stories that bridge the realms of illusion, reality, myth, and metaphor.
In her work, Hird work often explores the fluidity of time, where the present moment is depicted as a nexus that connects the past and future. Hird’s pieces evoke memories of bygone eras while inviting speculation on multiple possible futures, offering a layered narrative that transcends traditional storytelling.
Hird earned a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1977 and an MFA from Vermont College in 2007. She has been represented by the Nohra Haime Gallery in New York City and NH Galeria in Cartagena, Colombia. Her academic career includes serving as a Professor of Art at Saint Michael’s College and as a Professor of Visual Linguistics in the CORE Division of Champlain College, Vermont (2000–2019).
