Barry Smylie situates a solitary figure within the heavy, shadowed geometries of an urban streetscape, drawing on the traditions of mid-century urban realism. The composition hinges on a structural division between the pedestrian and the dense, textured mass of the glowing signature graffito planter box. Smylie’s background as a master lithographer informs the forceful diagonal sightlines of the sidewalk, anchoring the subject in a shallow foreground. Short, deliberate brushstrokes render the pale vegetation, contrasting the dark, muted architectural backdrop to emphasize the quiet isolation of the modern city dweller, cast here as a weary CEO exhausted by hard overtime.
