FINGER ROLL

Finger Roll captures the suspended instant between action and outcome. Inspired by the graceful release of a basketball during a finger roll layup, the work preserves the brief moment after the ball leaves the player's hand, when anticipation eclipses certainty. Time appears to pause as possibility exists in every direction—success and failure remain equally present, and expectation gives way to hope. A former collegiate basketball player, Maloy draws upon the physical language of sport to explore broader themes of vulnerability, trust, and perseverance. The hand becomes more than an athletic gesture; it is a portrait of commitment to an action whose result can no longer be controlled. Constructed from reclaimed leather fragments originally discarded during the footwear design and prototyping process, the work transforms materials intended for movement into a permanent record of movement itself. Through stitching and assembly, each fragment retains traces of its previous purpose while contributing to a new image. Finger Roll reflects on those universal moments when we release control and are left waiting for the future to reveal itself.
