Sonia Redfern disrupts the classical landscape tradition by using a stretched piece of reclaimed blue-and-white gingham fabric in place of a traditional canvas. This collision of painterly realism—evident in the thickly brushed coastal cliffs and churning ocean waters—with a manufactured textile substrate directly challenges the boundaries between fine art and domestic kitsch. White clouds are painted directly onto the geometric grid, establishing a surreal environment that subverts the romanticism of the natural vista. By painting a dynamic coastal scene on familiar, everyday fabric, Redfern grounds her environmental inquiries in the material reality of human production.
