Hot Lava

In *Hot Lava*, the artist merges the spatial organization of architectural design with the aggressive materiality of Abstract Expressionism. A searing horizontal band of cadmium red violently bisects the composition, operating as the titular molten intrusion. This central fissure disrupts heavy, structural blocks of deep teal, bright yellow, and stark black. Treating the surface as an excavated site, the artist builds dense layers of impasto before furiously scoring the wet pigment with sticks and knives. This self-described "primitive" methodology yields a heavily gouged, sgraffito texture where pigment is dragged and splattered across rigid geometric boundaries. The resulting tension pits an ordered, architectural scaffolding against the chaotic, destructive force of the raw gesture, rendering the canvas a highly tactile artifact of its own physical construction.
