Jerusalem Fumes
The city burned long before the fire was seen,
its stones carrying the memory of ancient sorrow,
its foundations holding the names
of those who had passed through its gates.
Beneath the earth, generations gathered in silence,
their prayers rising through the dust,
their longing woven
into the very substance of the land.
Along the horizon,
a river of crimson spread across the darkness,
bearing the heat of sacrifice
and the breath of unfinished things.
It moved between earth and heaven,
between the weight of remembrance
and the trembling possibility of dawn,
where the wounds of history
opened toward the eternal.
The prophets had spoken,
and their words remained among the stones,
carried by the wind through abandoned courtyards
and across the hills
where generations had stood
awaiting the voice of God.
Their lamentations mingled with the smoke,
ascending through the long centuries
of exile, return, and remembrance.
Above the burning horizon,
the heavens gathered in pale gold,
holding the ancient light of creation.
The earth breathed its grief into the vastness,
and the sky received the rising fumes,
each carrying the memory
of a covenant older than the city itself.
And there,
between the darkness and the light,
Jerusalem endured,
suspended in the long unfolding
of its own becoming,
its wounds bearing witness
to the terrible intimacy
of love and sacrifice.
For the covenant lived within the burning,
within the longing,
within the generations
who carried its burden and its blessing.
And through the rising fumes,
the ancient question passed once more
between earth and heaven:
Who will remember
what love has asked of us?
