Sonia Redfern challenges traditional hierarchies of fine art by executing a lush, mountainous landscape directly onto reclaimed gingham fabric. The stark, black-and-white grid of the textile acts as both the literal and atmospheric ground, subverting the painted illusion of depth with a flat, domestic materiality. By leaving the sky unpainted—save for a single celestial body—Redfern draws on her background in astronomy to collapse the vastness of space into a patterned plane. This juxtaposition of expressive brushwork against the rigid geometry of the found material questions the boundaries between kitsch and high art.
