Self portrait as a young child

Part of the HYBRIDITY collection, Kim Wan draws direct inspiration from Francis Bacon's 'paralytic baby,' translating mid-century bodily distortion into a modern digital format. Wan merges the raw energy of his painting background with a computer process called pixel sorting. This digital manipulation mimics the physical drag of thickly applied paint, framing the modern self not as a solid physical being, but as vulnerable data at risk of system failure. The image in the artwork is based on the artist a 3 years old. This is the only artwork in existence, he has created, as himself as a child.
