Three walked beneath the fading heavens,
their shadows gathering along the earth,
each carrying the weight of a promise
whose beginning lay beyond remembrance.
The first bore the sorrow of what had been,
the second the burden of what remained,
the third the trembling uncertainty
of all that was yet to come.
They walked as generations had walked,
through the long fields of exile,
through the silence of unanswered prayers,
through the places where love
had been mistaken for obedience,
and devotion for the surrender of the soul.
Above them, a narrow thread of gold
stretched across the darkening horizon,
holding the distance between earth and heaven,
between the covenant once spoken
and the covenant still becoming.
Their heads were bowed
toward the ground that received their footsteps,
each carrying a portion of the other's grief,
each bound to a history
larger than the life they had been given.
And somewhere along the crossing,
the promise changed its dwelling.
What had once been held in stone
began to breathe within the living,
passing from one wounded heart to another,
from memory into mercy,
from the burden of inheritance
into the freedom of devotion.
Still they walked,
beneath the thin and patient light,
their footsteps disappearing into the earth,
their passage becoming
the quiet testimony of those
who had carried the covenant
farther than they could see.
And the gold remained,
a slender line across the darkness,
holding open the ancient question
of what it means
to remain faithful
to one another
along the way.
