TIP-OFF

Tip-Off captures the instant two opponents rise simultaneously toward a shared objective. Inspired by the opening jump ball in basketball, the work suspends the moment before possession is decided, when neither athlete holds an advantage and possibility remains equally balanced. It is a fleeting intersection of competition, anticipation, and ambition. A former collegiate basketball player, Maloy draws upon the physical language of sport to explore broader questions of aspiration, resilience, and human potential. The intertwined figures become more than athletes; they embody the universal drive to reach beyond one's current position, confronting challenge through effort, discipline, and hope. Constructed from reclaimed leather fragments originally discarded during the footwear design and prototyping process, the work transforms materials once intended for movement into a permanent record of movement itself. Through stitching and layered assembly, each fragment retains traces of its previous purpose while contributing to a new composition. Tip-Off reflects on the moments that define us—not when victory is secured, but when we choose to rise toward possibility.
